At a cabinet meeting on January 25, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz made the decision to send Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine. The U.S. has also agreed to send a battalion of M1 Abrams tanks. The arrival of modern tanks, long hoped for by Kyiv, is considered by many to be a possible game-changer in the war in Ukraine.
Max Bergmann is the director of the Europe, Russia, and Eurasia Program and the Stuart Center in Euro-Atlantic and Northern European Studies at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).
